OK, so here’s the big fancy acronym: “Asynchronous JavaScript And XML”

In terms of data logic, AJAX (asynchronous JavaScript and XML) allows people to create web applications that are easier to use. User-friendly. AJAX enables the application to send requests and retrieve data in the background without reloading the page.

And in case you’re wondering: Asynchronous is a data logic term computer programmers use. (Pronounced: A-Syn-Kra-Nus, with the accent on the initial “A”). Asynchronous is an old fashioned word (circa 1748) that’s been morphed into a second meaning, used here, which denotes digital communication transmission methods.

AJAX is a bit of a misnomer. From the name: “Asynchronous JavaScript And XML” you’d assume that JavaScript and XML are involved. However, you don’t have to always use JavaScript And XML to build according to AJAX specs. This is just one of those confusing little terms that annoy all of us normal people.

AJAX or Asynchronous JavaScript And XML refers to a group of web development techniques. AJAX is used in building interactive web applications and/or in coding rich Internet applications.

Synonyms: statistical multiplexing (packet mode, etc.)
